Navigating the festive season while grieving

The festive season often brings ideas of joy and togetherness, but for those who are grieving, it can feel especially difficult. Feelings of loss may feel sharper, and routines or celebrations can be challenging. These supportive approaches may help you, children, and young people navigate the holidays with care.

Acknowledge Feelings

  • Notice and accept your emotions, and those of children and young people. Everyone grieves differently — some may want company, others may need quiet. There is no right or wrong way to feel.

Plan Gently

  • Choose the activities and traditions that feel manageable, and let go of those that feel too heavy. Share your needs with family and friends so you’re not placed in situations that feel overwhelming.

Adapt or Create Traditions

  • Honouring your special person through a small ritual, memory, or familiar activity can bring comfort. Continue traditions if they feel right, or shape new ones that hold meaning

Seek Support

  • Reach out to people who understand and can offer steady care.

Set Boundaries

  • Protect your well‑being by saying no when you need to. Take breaks, rest, and give yourself permission to step back from situations that feel too much.

Use Creative Expression

  • Writing, drawing, or creating something in honour of your loved one can help express feelings when words are difficult.

Prioritise Self‑Care

  • Look after your physical and emotional health — rest, eat regularly, move gently, and spend time with supportive people. Go at a pace that feels right for you.

Grief can feel magnified during the festive season, even when you thought things were easing. With support, understanding, and self‑care, it’s possible to move through the holidays in a way that feels manageable. Grief is ongoing and personal, and seeking professional support is always okay.
